History of the Greater Springfield Dental Society
(Taken from an early copy of the bylaws)
J. A. Nattrass was the first dentist in this district. Little has been found about him. He was here long before the Civil War and for a considerable period after. First and second City Directories for Springfield (1878 and 1881) listed him with an office and residence at 230 South Street.
Eleazer Hovey was the second pioneer dentist. He was born in 1816 in Trenton, N.Y. and came to Texas County, Missouri, in 1840 to work as a millwright. Sometime after 1840, he came to Springfield to study dentistry with Dr. Nattrass and later took up the study of medicine. Dr. Hovey practiced both dentistry and medicine for some time in Buffalo but, preferring dentistry, gave up the practice of medicine. He went to Ohio in 1850 but returned in a few months to again take up practice in Buffalo. In 1862 he entered partnership with Dr. Nattrass in Springfield and stayed until around the close of the Civil War when he sold his practice and equipment to Dr. Nattrass due to ill health. He returned to his home in Dallas County, but came back to Springfield in 1880 where he died on April 19, 1898.
Chas. F. Wright was the third in the trio who fathered dentistry in the Springfield territory. He moved to Springfield in 1864. He studied dentistry and practiced with Dr. Nattrass, later opening his own office. Dr. Wright died in 1895.
The Springfield Dental Society was organized in the autumn of 1905. It was organized as a local society. However, a majority of its members were also members of the Missouri State Dental Association so it seemed natural to cooperate with the state organization. Especially since the annual meeting of the state association was in Springfield in June 1906. Those present at the first meeting in 1905 as founders of the Springfield dental Society were:
W. R. Anderson J. C. Park
Howell Boatner H. T. Rand
J. V. Boswell W. S. Sweet
R. E. Darby W. E. Tucker
J. A. James W. Ed. Tucker
H. C. Kitchell T. T. Umbarger
J. B. McBride J. L. Wetzel
R. H. McCrum
The opportunity for professional betterment and good fellowship appealed to dentists in towns of the surrounding territory who sought and were given membership.
The society was officially made the Springfield District Dental Society and its territory designated May 23, 1910, when the Missouri State Dental Association in annual session in St. Louis reorganized establishing component district societies.
The National Dental Association was reorganized in Kansas City in 1913 making components of the state organizations. This being done, it made the district society responsible for judging qualifications, reception of members and collection of dues simultaneously for the three organizations. These were evolutionary changes in organization for greater efficiency, harmony and scientific advancement worthy of the dental profession.
